The Mahone Bay Alternate School Middle Level Transition Program program exists for students from grades 7-9 who are having difficulties in the regular stream of education. There are a wide range of reasons that students find success within this program. We accept students with a broad range of challenges; including those with anxiety, behavioural issues, victims of bullying, etc.
Our student body makeup is essentially the same as that you would see in the regular stream; however, the smaller teacher-to-student ratio allows students to get more one-on-one attention and the school atmosphere allows a more holistic approach to education with greater focus on social and inter-personal growth.
Students in this program learn the skills needed to achieve success in the regular school system. As this is a one year program, students are expected to return to their original school. Transition meetings in this process are an integral piece in this success becoming a reality. Students may stay in this program for the full year, or if they choose, return to their original school to complete their year (this will be a joint decision between the student, parent/guardian, teachers, and the sending school based on what will be best for the student).
Students who have a history of being on Individual Program Plans (IPP) and who are receiving the necessary help in their current school are not eligible for this program.
