Q: What is the Mahone Bay Alternate School?
A: MBAS is a school program run by the South Shore Regional School Board that serves students from grades 7-12 who are struggling in the regular school system and may be at risk of not continuing their education or not graduating.
Q: I hear that the alternate school is, like, basically just a school for bad kids or kids that aren't that bright. Is that true?
A: No. That is not at all true. Students who attend this school come here for a variety of reasons. We have a smaller student-to-teacher ratio than classes in the regular stream. Our student make-up is essentially identical to what you would find in a regular classroom, there are just fewer students. Our courses are identical to courses you would take in a regular school and the curriculum and outcomes achieved are identical to every other school in the province. You graduate from MBAS with the same Nova Scotia Graduation Certificate as every other student in the province (there is no *asterisk because you happened to attend an alternate school). We have had many students move on to post-secondary education at Nova Scotia Community College, Acadia University, and Dalhousie University.
